This is achieved through measuring and analysing the electricity use of server and desktop computing . Our project management and technology professionals then design and implement a program of work, based on our in-house methodologies derived from the PMBOK and Prince2, to reduce energy consumption. IBM

BM believes environmental sustainability and profitability go hand in hand. Businesses, both large and small, that fail to tackle the present inefficiencies in IT are likely to see spiralling energy costs, draining profits and impacts upon brand image whilst businesses that see corporate social responsibility as a competitive differentiator can benefit from lower operational costs and increased appeal to consumers, employees and investors.

IBM is investing heavily in making its technology more efficient, less costly to run and less damaging to the environment than ever before. In 2007 IBM announced the 'Big Green' initiative - $1B invested each year to accelerate green technologies and services building a roadmap of solutions to enable our Business Partners to help clients address the IT energy crisis. Equally, IBM is using lessons learnt internally, leveraging over three decades of environmental policy, to advise its clients on ways to help restructure their business activities and reduce their overall carbon footprint.

Victorian Government

Innovation, underpinned by new technologies, has a crucial role to play in resolving some of the major environmental issues of our times. The Victorian Government is working to support advanced ICT capabilities in Victoria to meet these challenges.

Already there are several ICT projects in which the Victorian Government is supporting leading edge technological developments with real-world environmental applications.

Leading-edge use of broadband through the Government’s Broadband Innovation Fund is supporting environmental projects in agriculture, climate change and natural resource management. Moreover, through the National ICT Australia (NICTA) Victoria Research Laboratory, world-leading commercial ICT solutions are being developed including the NICTOR wireless moisture sensors for regulating agricultural irrigation.

Alongside industry the Victorian Government is also delivering the Byteback program, offering Victorian households the chance to dispose of unwanted computers and other ICT products in an environmentally responsible way, with up to 97 per cent of materials recovered to be recycled or re-used.
